The Social Media Academy is pleased to be working in partnership with South & City College Birmingham to enable employers and young people to benefit from the Social Media apprenticeship and the business opportunities that are presented by commercialising your on-line space.
South and City College Birmingham was the pilot course and this has proven to be a very popular apprenticeship. Many young people use social media as a matter of course - we harness this enthusiasm to drive forward business growth, extend your reach and create true digital citizens, able to be your on-line ambassadors and advocates.The first step is for us to understand your business - your goals, your growth plans and any barriers that are preventing this growth. This will enable us to more closely tailor the content we deliver to the apprentices, ensuring maximum return on investment and meaning the apprentice we place with you has a working knowledge of your business from day one. We can gather this information by email or phone but ideally from a face to face meeting. We may be social media experts, but we still value personal relationships and investing time in those we work with.
The apprentices will spend an intensive week at the College before they join the employer. During this time they will go through a standard College induction and start to learn how their intuitive social media skills can be leveraged for business growth. They will also participate in sessions about developing a good work ethic and team work, with the aim being they are "oven ready" to join you by the end of this first week.

How does the apprentice in Social Media works?
Apprentices spend five days a week with their employer, dialling in from your premises once a week to our virtual classroom where they'll participate in lectures, group discussions and be set assignments. Once a month they will return to College to meet with their assessor to check on their progression through the course. This approach minimises disruption to your business and maximises on the apprentices exposure to real work experience combined with blended learning solutions.
At the end of the 12 month period the apprentices will have a Level 3 qualification in Leveraging Social Media for Business Enterprise. During this time, your organisation will commit to paying their salary in line with minimum wage requirements - more information about wages can be found here.

Employers will be offered an incentive payment to recruit a young people as an apprentice;
£3,000 for employers taking on a young person aged 16 or 17 at a rate of £3.00 per hour
£4,500 for employers taking on a young person aged 18 to 20 at a rate of £4.98 per hour
£6,000 for employers taking on a young person aged 21 to 24 at a rate of £6.19 per hour
The employer will offer the young apprentice a minimum employment contract of 35 hours per week for at least 12 months and adhere to the agreed minimum hourly rates. They will also commit to employing the young apprentice for the full duration of the apprenticeship which could last from 1 year to 4 years. The incentives will be reduced by £1500 to employers who are eligible to claim the National Apprenticeship Service AGE grant. Flexibility is a key component to the success of the scheme.
At the end of the 12 month period you may wish to offer your apprentice a permanent position but are under no obligation to do so.
